Mulching

Mulching & Bed Work in Winchester, VA

Fresh mulch applied at a depth that actually helps, bed lines cut crisp and sharp, and the whole planting bed left looking deliberate instead of overgrown.

Depth is where most mulch jobs go wrong

Mulch is supposed to be two to three inches deep. Piled six inches up against a tree trunk or a shrub, it does real damage: the bark stays wet, roots grow up into the mulch instead of down into the soil, and rodents get a highway straight to the trunk under cover. We keep mulch pulled back off the trunk flare and the crown of every plant, which is the difference between a bed that looks tidy for one season and one that stays healthy for years.

Mulch earns its cost in three ways. It holds soil moisture through a Virginia July, it keeps the soil temperature steadier through winter freeze and thaw, and it suppresses weeds by blocking the light weed seeds need to germinate. A properly mulched bed is not just a look — it is less work for you all season.

What the job includes

  • Old mulch and leaf litter cleared back so the new layer sits on soil, not on rot
  • Bed lines cut with a spade or edger for a sharp, clean curve against the lawn
  • Fresh double-shredded hardwood mulch, or black or brown dyed if you prefer
  • Weeds pulled before mulching, and pre-emergent considered where it makes sense
  • Shrubs and perennials in the bed trimmed and shaped at the same time

When to mulch in the Valley

Late spring is the classic window, once the soil has warmed and the perennials are up, and it sets the beds up for the whole season. Early autumn is the other good window — it insulates roots going into winter and makes the property look finished right when neighbours are out walking.

How much you need depends on bed square footage and how much of last year's mulch has broken down. We measure the beds rather than guessing from the driveway, so you are not paying for three yards when the job takes two, or short two yards and looking at bare soil by August.

Good questions, straight answers

Mulching questions, answered

Still not sure whether this is the right job for your yard? Call or text (540) 292-7964 and ask — there is no charge for the conversation.

How much mulch do my beds need?

Plan on two to three inches of depth. We measure the bed square footage and work out the yardage from there, so you pay for the mulch the job actually takes.

What kind of mulch do you use?

Double-shredded hardwood is the standard because it knits together and stays put on a slope. Black and brown dyed mulch are also available if you prefer a specific look.

Should old mulch be removed first?

Usually not — it just needs to be broken up and topped up. We only strip a bed back when the old layer has matted down or there is disease in it.

Will mulching get rid of my weeds?

It suppresses them heavily by cutting off light, and on top of a clean bed it makes a large difference. No mulch stops every weed, so we pull what is there before we start.
